Where limestone meets the countryside: the Causses of Quercy

South of the Massif Central, between the Lot and the Dordogne, lies a hidden land of limestone plateaus and oak forests, shaped by rivers, that seems to have escaped the hustle and bustle of the world.

Welcome to the Causses of Quercy

Gorges, stone villages, and light that changes throughout the day. People often come by chance. They return on purpose.

The Villages

Les maisons quercynoises

The villages of Quercy have a character of their own. They seem to compete in beauty and charm, with great discretion. The streets are narrow, the gardens hidden, and the Quercy houses—solid, proud, carved from stone—are proudly guarded. It's the kind of place where you put down your bags and forget to leave.

Many of these villages are perched on rocky spurs, towering dozens of meters above the valleys, like one of the most beautiful village in France ("Les plus beaux villages de France"), Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. Each has its own silhouette, its own viewpoint. The view from the heights alone is worth the detour: meanders of the Lot, walnut fields, and an endless horizon of causses.

Les rivières

Below, the Lot and the Célé rivers wind between white and ocher limestone cliffs. The waters are clear, the banks shaded. It's an ideal area for hiking or canoeing — but also simply for sitting by the water and doing nothing in particular.

"Mouton à lunettes"

On the plateaus, the ewes — known as "Caussenardes" — graze freely, helping to maintain these open landscapes that give the causses their charm. They also have a definite sense of style.

The Light

La lumière

The light of the causses is unique. In the morning, the glowing light touches the tops of the oak trees, lengthens the shadows on the plateaus, and slips into the mist. In the evening, it adorns itself with pink and lavender, transforming every village into a painting. The sun certainly puts on a show here.
